"What I'm after isn't flexible
bodies, but flexible brains..."

-Moshe Feldenkrais

Picture
Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) was a remarkable person whose talents and pursuits took him through many outstanding life experiences and into many areas of specialized knowledge. He was a person who prized learning and self-development, which is at the heart of The Feldenkrais Method®. As a young man Feldenkrais seriously injured his knee and opted out of the recommended surgery, instead discovering he could walk without pain in taking himself through a careful regimen of his own design. He went on to become a black belt in Judo and publish several books on self-defence. He obtained a degree in mechanical and electrical engineering from Ecole des Travaux Publics des Paris and worked as an assistant for Frederic Joliot-Curie at the Radium Institute. He then worked as a scientist for the British Admiralty during the war and later as a consultant and inventor until returning to Israel. During these years he continued to develop his theories of mind and body integration, working with himself and others. Around 1954 he began to focus solely on developing his own method and his ideas about learning through movement began to materialize more concretely as he worked with many people, including the prime minister of Israel. The success in his treatments soon drew attention and in turn people who wanted to study with him.
